The Book Handlers

An audience favorite from 2018! A comedy about anti-intellectualism inspired by a short story by Brian O’Nolan.

Do you have a large library full of beautiful but unread books? Never fear! The Book Handlers are here to make your books look worn-in and well-read. Look cultured, cultivated, literate without all the fuss of actually having to read anything.

The stage is filled with different levels of lofted areas. There are baskets hanging from the ceiling and the walls are covered with the multiple attempts at painting the same thing… A pot that has a sad plant in it. There is a large desk and a rusty old conveyer belt that leads to a bath tub at the front of the stage. There are 4 workers clearly deep in discussion about something that had happened during the workday.

There is a giant room that has a couple of lofted areas. The room looks rusted out and old and wet. The shorter lofted area, which has a desk and crates of books all around it, has a slide that goes down from it to the bathtub that is below in which a disheveled workers is sitting. Behind the bathtub and under the lofted area is a “break” area for workers to have tea and conversations. To the left of the bathtub, there is a rusty old conveyor belt where another working is leaning against it and talking to the disheveled woman. This conveyor belt connects the tub to a giant desk filled with books, where an uptight worker is working. Behind this desk is a giant lofted area, which as a ladder going up to it. On top of it there is a desk with a chair and crates of books. Just next to that is a lovely sitting chair. Below the lofted area there is another ladder attached to the wall which can slide back and forth to retrieve things from a high shelf. Standing just next to it, another worker, with hands on his hips, looks annoyed at his coworkers.
