Wake

A CORRUPTION OF THE TEMPEST

On an island enchanted by the spirit Ariel, Prospero, his daughter Miranda and their slave Caliban, await a passing ship, peopled with men from their home of Milan. Only, in Buntport’s riff on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the ship doesn’t come. Years pass. Prospero fills his daughter’s head with stories of what will happen when they spy the ship … of the storm Ariel will create … of the shipwreck … of the revenge Prospero will enact … of the love Miranda will find. But the ship doesn’t come. And more years pass.

Buntport Theater Company collaboratively created Wake with Adam Stone, who also created the musical soundscape of the island. Using much of Shakespeare’s text, they have re-imagined the lives of the characters, who are stuck in a loop, waiting for Shakespeare’s plot to begin while simultaneously acting the plot out to pass the time. Using Buntport’s malleable performance space to its fullest, Wake transports the audience to a small island, the only world that most of the inhabitants have ever known.
